Who Is More Valuable To Their Team: Lamar Jackson or Brock Purdy?

The Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers have MVP-caliber quarterbacks, but who is the most valuable to their team's success?
In this story:

The Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers are tied for the best record in the NFL through 15 weeks. They both have top defenses and quarterbacks that are playing at the top of their games.

Brock Purdy and Lamar Jackson play the game differently, but both are asked to do a lot in complex offensive schemes. With Jackson, he not only is the team's leading rusher but is helping an offense with limited dynamic playmakers become a top unit in football. He's seventh in the league in total yards combined.

Purdy, on the other hand, is fourth in total yards and leads the league in total touchdowns.

As of right now, Purdy and Jackson are 1-2 in the NFL MVP voting on the latest odds by DraftKings. San Fran's quarterback is a favorite at the moment at -200, but should he be?

Is Purdy as valuable to the 49ers as Jackson is to the Ravens?

The question is far more complex than just looking at the exact numbers.

Baltimore's three losses have all come with Jackson at quarterback, but have come about differently than San Francisco's. In Baltimore's 22-19 overtime loss to the Indianapolis Colts, the defense thwarted a 300-total-yard effort from Jackson in the final minutes. A 14-point blown lead to the Cleveland Browns and five drops against the Pittsburgh Steelers have been the only blemishes that necessarily don't fall on the blame of the Ravens' former league MVP.

Baltimore also will not have a 1,000-yard runner or receiver by the end of the season. A clear demarcation point of how the Ravens continue to win thanks to the play of the quarterback.

The same can't be said for Purdy.

During San Francisco's three-game losing streak this season, the second-year quarterback had a hand in all three losses. Purdy threw five interceptions to just three touchdown passes while the 49ers missed both Trent Williams and Christian McCaffrey.

In the case of a player that is "most valuable," not being able to succeed without the help of two dynamic playmakers on an offense certainly doesn't help one's case.

It also is important to note that while Purdy is the MVP front-runner now, McCaffrey has the fourth-best odds of any player.

A quarterback on a team with another MVP-caliber player shouldn't be considered the "most valuable" of any team.

If context is included, it's pretty clear that the Ravens' star quarterback is more valuable than the one in San Fran. The matchup on Monday Night will be an important step for either quarterback to reach that mark.
