Lamar 'Wants To Be Elite!' Coach Todd Monken Hypes Ravens QB
The highlight of the offseason for the Baltimore Ravens was undoubtedly keeping superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson, signing him to a record-breaking contract extension.
However, while the reception was overwhelmingly positive, there were some who questioned if his extension would cause complacency in the Ravens' signal-caller. Well, new offensive coordinator Todd Monken addressed any such concerns on Friday.
"The thing you like about Lamar is, he's becoming more diligent," Monken said. "He wants to be great. He wants to be elite. I do not see a guy that signed a contract and said, 'OK, I've arrived.' [It's more], 'I want to be elite; I want this offense to be elite; I want to give ourselves a chance to win every week.' That's been impressive."
Of course, anyone who's ever watched Jackson would know how good he is when fully healthy. Going back four years to 2019, he won MVP after passing for 3,127 yards and 36 touchdowns while adding 1,206 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
There is no denying how special of a talent the Ravens quarterback is and what he means to the offense. Entering his first season with the team, Monken sees the best in Jackson and will do whatever it takes to ensure it comes out on the field.
"I'm a firm believer that [if] you want your quarterback to play his best, you've got to empower him," Monken said. "[It becomes] 'I want to help with the game plan. I want to see things – what they're doing defensively.'"
Jackson might not be the MVP quarterback he was in 2019, but that doesn't mean he can't elevate his play. If Monken can bolster the offensive game plan and fully unlock him, then it could be a special season in Baltimore.
