3 Players to Watch at Saints Camp Day 11
With the New Orleans Saints having lost both linebacker Andrew Dowell and running back Eno Benjamin early in training camp, there are some prime opportunities for players to meet some big needs for the team. Having the time to have already gotten their legs under them, here are three players we will be watching today that have a good chance to prove that they can step up and fill those gaps.
RB Kendre Miller
Miller has already had an impressive camp as is. But his next step is to show how he can continue to grow as a route-runner out of the backfield. Sunday was a good start with a great wheel route win against the second level that went for a touchdown reception. The catch was far from easy with the linebacker in good position. But Miller got up, made a play on the ball at its high-point and reeled the pass in. Those moments are ones that he has been stacking all camp so far.
However, it will be about what he can do while running routes, not just as a pass-catcher. Learning to use leverage, to sell routes and create separation will be next on his list as he continues to develop. With star back Alvin Kamara suspended for the first three games, Miller and the offense need to get in rhythm. Being indoors Monday will help.
LB Nick Anderson
The former Tulane Green Wave defender has multiple opportunities to prove that he could be the next undrafted free agent rookie linebacker to earn a big role with the team. Like the now-injured Andrew Dowell ahead of him, Anderson has been outstanding in special teams and continues to grow into that role. But he has also found himself in good position on some nice defensive plays. He is by no means winning each and every rep, but that is far from surprising - no player does. But his confidence is evident and his comfort is surprising for a rookie. He will continue to get his shot at proving that he could be a valuable asset for the team's second level.
Though with the Saints hosting veteran linebacker Anthony Barr, things could get a little dicey for the second level again. Veteran competition and experience can always go a long way. Even if that also means pushing the young guys like Nick to develop more quickly.
DB Ugo Amadi
Need a slot corner? What about a depth safety? How about a core special teamer? Enter Amadi for all of those needs. He has shown a penchant for all of the above, but also as a supplementary pass rusher from the slot and a solid run defender. Amadi's recognition for play flow, discipline for run responsibilities and playmaking ability are a very, very intriguing combination for an addition that not many highlighted in free agency. New Orleans always brings in one under-the-radar player from the open market that ends up having a bigger impact than expected. Watch out for Amadi and his diverse skills set to be that player in 2023.
