Geno Smith Says Seattle Seahawks 'Usually Thrive' in Clutch Despite Stalling Late vs. Dallas Cowboys
The Seattle Seahawks went blow for blow with the Dallas Cowboys in an entertaining game Thursday night before falling 41-35 at AT&T Stadium. Seattle played one of its best games of the year, but late-game miscues dropped them to a 6-6 record.
The Seahawks' offense walked up and down the field the entire game as Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn's unit simply couldn't stop what Seattle offensive coordinator Shane Waldron was dialing up ... until the fourth quarter.
Three fourth-down stops from Quinn's defense, including on the Seahawks' final drive, swung momentum for the Cowboys and would secure the result.
Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith was slicing and dicing the Cowboys defense by going 23 of 41 passing for 344 yards, 3 touchdowns and one pick along with a rushing touchdown. He admitted it tough to lose a game where the Seahawks offense played so well, with the late-game shortcomings being a confusing part of the equation.
“I thought we got into a rhythm early, and then I thought we came out in the second half kind of started out strong,” Smith said. “I wish we would have finished the game a lot better in those situations when we have the ball at the end of the game, chance to win it, we usually thrive in those situations, and we just fell short of the goal.”
One of the big reasons why the Seahawks offense was able to move up and down the field with ease was the play of DK Metcalf, who torched Cowboys standout cornerback DaRon Bland multiple times. He gashed the Dallas defense on his way to a six-catch, 134-yard, three-touchdown game.
Coming into the game, Metcalf had three touchdowns for the season and burst back into form primetime.
Smith praised Metcalf's performance in the loss.
“I thought DK was just playing the way that he always is, I mean he was running so fast out there I think he hit 22 mile an hour," Smith said. "Shoot man, he made a bunch of plays, he's such a mismatch out there. I just appreciate playing with him, and I thought he had a phenomenal game. I thought everything about what he did was awesome.”
The Seahawks now have to pick themselves up off the canvas and get ready to face the San Francisco 49ers for the second time this season in Week 14.
Currently on a three-game losing streak, Seattle needs to steady the ship. Otherwise, the once-promising season will be wasted. But if the team can replicate their efforts from Thursday night against the 49ers, they will be in the game up to their eyeballs.
For now, though, they have to get past losing a game they gave themselves every chance of winning.
