'Good Talks!' Geno Smith Contract Update from Seahawks GM John Schneider
Geno Smith has already gone public to reveal that contract talks with the Seattle Seahawks are underway and are positive.
“I love Seattle,” Smith said. “We have a great relationship. I think we’ll work things out. ...
And now comes more positivity from general manager John Schneider via a recent radio appearance on Seattle Sports 710.
"Good talks so far," Schneider said of negotiations with Smith, the NFL Comeback Player of the Year after a stellar season in which he led Seattle to a surprising playoff berth. "We're in it. We're just trying to figure out what's best, and we'll do what's right. ...''
Ideally, "what's right'' for the Seahawks mirrors "what's right'' for Smith, who we assume will certainly get a contract offer well in excess of $30 million APY ... that thought even as speculation continues about the idea of Seattle drafting an heir to Smith, 32.
Oh, and speaking of speculation: We address here the idea that Geno would leave town somehow and move to Tampa Bay to continue working with Dave Canales, who moves from being the Seattle QB coach to serving as the Bucs offensive coordinator.
One way for the Seahawks to retain Geno as the short-term solution is the franchise tag, with that window opening on Feb. 21 and guaranteeing the QB $32.4 million next year.
But that doesn't sound like where this is heading, according to Smith himself.
“We’re in the process of getting all that settled right now,” Smith said. “It’s looking very good.”
Added Schneider: "Free agency doesn't start until the middle of March so there's a huge period here where we have time to work through things."
