Lamar Jackson vs. Geno Smith: Seahawks Trade Idea with Ravens?

Geno Smith is 32 and a rejuvenated journeyman. Lamar Jackson just turned 26 with a league MVP to his credit. The Seahawks owe some loyalty to Smith … but also owe it to themselves to explore the Ravens' trade-minded thinking.

Geno Smith has done all the right things to earn a contract that figures to pay him in excess of $30 million APY.

But Lamar Jackson has done all the right things, too ... and the Baltimore Ravens are dragging their feet on a deal that figures to eventually pay him $50 million.

At their relative price tags and their relative talent levels ...

Which QB would the Seahawks rather employ?

After a 2022 offseason that saw the acquisition of key players and draft assets was followed up with a surprising season and a run to the playoffs, the Seahawks find themselves with the potential to pull off something big.

But trading for Ravens quarterback and free agent-to-be Jackson? Maybe that's too big of a dream to invest energy into.

Maybe ...

Still, the Seahawks have to pieces to make it a realistic deal if the opportunity arises. With the No. 5 and No. 20 overall selections in April's draft, they already have the beginning puzzle pieces to pull off the unlikely and acquire a franchise-defining talent like Jackson in a potential sign-and-trade. Despite playing in 12 games this season after suffering a knee injury, Jackson comes with his own uncertainty, but the Seahawks would be foolish to overthink themselves out of a deal.

Of course, a deal like this would mean Seahawks quarterback Smith would have to sign elsewhere ... or maybe he could be one of the key items the Ravens receive in this hypothetical trade.

Either way, no Smith means no real answer at quarterback next season for a Seahawks team that will settle for nothing less than another postseason appearance.

And using their two first-round picks along with a few players in the deal could be enough to give the Seahawks one of the league's most electric players.
