Seahawks QB Geno Smith Credits 'Coach Preparation' For Game-Winning Drive vs. Titans
The Seattle Seahawks' 20-17 win over the Tennessee Titans was hard-fought and gritty, as Geno Smith, in his first game back from a groin injury, led a superb game-winning drive with the season on the line.
The offense was stuttering and spluttering all game, but when push came to shove late in the fourth quarter, Smith and the offense got rolling to the tune of a 17-play, 53-yard drive that ended with a Colby Parkinson touchdown.
The drive marks Smith's fourth game-winning drive of the season. He is just one short of his career-best in a season (five in his rookie season in 2013).
But what does he credit as the reason for the team to be able to execute when the game is on the line?
“It's preparation, Smith said. “Coach [Pete Carroll] prepares us for these opportunities for these moments every single day, we go over two minute [drill] a bunch of different situations and scenarios. It helps when you get out there on the field, you're used to it, what to do, guys are calm, they know their assignments and I mean you saw it doesn't matter who the quarterback is.
“Coach prepares us to be in those situations and to make those plays and that's what we're about as Seahawks man we're going to fight to the finish and if the ball's in our hands as an offense you know we want to make sure we close it out.”
The offense wasn't at its best against the Titans as through three quarters, they had only scored six points.
But in the fourth quarter, when the game was there to be won, Smith led two drives, one being a 13-play, 81-yard touchdown drive and then the game-winning drive. So things weren't going smoothly, but when it needed to, Shane Waldron's offense got it done.
With the Seahawks holding the No. 7 seed in the NFC, they will need to continue winning to guarantee their spot in the postseason.
Seahawks QB Geno Smith 'In Such A Good Place'; Solidifies Reputation As NFL Starter
With the coach's preparation giving the team a good foundation for when the going gets tough, should Seattle make it into the playoffs, it will be a tough matchup for whoever they face.
And as for Smith, despite being sidelined for two weeks with a groin injury, he stepped up when his team needed it most. For all the preparation in the world, it doesn't matter if you don't have a quarterback capable of executing in crunch time...and he did it to perfection.
