Seahawks Trade for Aaron Rodgers: New ‘Bold Move’ Prediction
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has found himself who knows where this offseason. But even while he's off in a dark cabin somewhere, trade predictions won't stop piling up.
Meanwhile, the Seattle Seahawks seemingly have their quarterback situation all locked up for 2023. All Geno Smith needs to do is get franchise tagged or sign a new contract, and he'll be the starter for at least one more season.
But despite that, Rodgers and the Seahawks have somehow found themselves intertwined in the latest big offseason trade prediction, and this one's coming from left field.
Sports Illustrated listed the five-best landing spots for Rodgers in a potential deal and has Seattle coming in at No. 3 while providing the trade package and reasons why the fit does or doesn't work.
Seahawks trade: No. 5 pick, No. 124 pick (fourth round)
Packers trade: QB Aaron Rodgers
The Seahawks would be giving up some important draft stock in exchange for the 39-year-old Rodgers, who is set to make around $58 million on an option bonus next season. Green Bay could then draft a defensive star in the top five while transitioning to the Jordan Love era or could start over at quarterback with the newly-acquired pick.
As for the Seahawks, they'd become instant contenders in the NFC, as a Rodgers-led offense with DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Kenneth Walker III along with an improving defense would be something to behold.
But of course, we're walking too deep into fantasy land at this point.
Still, here's what SI had to say about why the fit could work, if the unlikely ended up happening.
Why Rodgers fits:
The Seahawks have plenty to offer with a talented roster and they have the cap space and draft picks to execute a blockbuster trade. Seattle has two first-round picks and two second-round selections in April’s draft—courtesy of the Wilson trade with the Broncos. Finding quality receivers was an issue in Green Bay. That wouldn’t be the case in Seattle with the receiving tandem of DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. Rodgers would also have a balanced attack with running back Kenneth Walker, who’s coming off a sensational rookie season.
Why he doesn’t:
Perhaps GM John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll stay the course by continuing to build through the draft and make an effort to re-sign Smith, which would cost less than chasing Rodgers. The Seahawks might also consider drafting a quarterback with the No. 5 pick, another cheaper option than Rodgers. ... Then again, the Seahawks came out on the better end of the Wilson trade and might avoid making the same mistakes as Denver.
It's tough to rule out anything, especially considering the Seahawks and the 12s never thought they'd see the day where Russell Wilson was traded away for what appeared to be a rebuilding move. But this Rodgers deal seems a bit too unlikely ... of course, until it isn't.
