Seattle Seahawks Defense Not Elite Yet, But 'Moving in Right Direction!'
Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner arrived in town right in the middle of the defensive "Legion of Boom" days. While not an official member of the L.O.B., Wagner played alongside the likes of Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, Brandon Browner, Byron Maxwell, Jeremy Lane, and Walter Thurmond, and recognizes some of the same characteristics in his current teammates.
“We’re moving in the right direction,” Wagner said.
The Seahawks' defense has been on a tear lately. For just the third time in franchise history - and the third time during coach Pete Carroll's tenure - the Seattle defense has held opponents to under 250 total yards or less in three straight contests.
The previous two times were in 2014 when the defense held six consecutive opponents to 250 yards or less, and in 2015 with many of the same pieces on the defensive roster. Both times were in the heyday of the Legion of Boom.
The current roster of Seahawks isn't quite there yet, but that's not to say they can't be.
“Early on, we were still meshing, learning how to grow,” safety Julian Love said. “And now, we’re vibing. We know where each other is going to be. So we have to keep stacking.”
One of the team's defensive strengths is at corner. For the second consecutive year, the Seahawks have a corner who should be in the discussion for Defensive Rookie of the Year. A season ago, fifth-round pick Riq Woolen stood out. This year, first-rounder Devon Witherspoon continues to impress.
While they're not yet on pace with the original Legion of Boom, there's no reason this unit can't be just as impactful in time.
