Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith 'Almost Perfect' vs. Washington Commanders
It would have been easy for the Seattle Seahawks to let last week's blowout 37-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens beat them twice. After all, almost everything that could go wrong did.
However, that isn't how things unfolded at Lumen Field on Sunday, as the Seahawks (6-3) got back to their winning ways with a last-second 29-26 win over a Washington Commanders team that provided more fight than their record would've suggested.
At the heart of the Seahawks' win was the improved play of quarterback Geno Smith, who had come under some fire in recent weeks due to increased turnovers, especially after the blowout loss to the Ravens.
"I thought he was almost perfect, all but maybe once perfect," Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said of Smith's performance post-game. "The throws he had to come up with, the calls, the poise, the cadence, running the club, the whole thing. He was perfect. I thought he was just exactly what we would hope we can see in him. I'm sure he had great numbers today. Must have had terrific numbers. But more than that, he just came through, just like we're counting on."
After struggling to get anything going versus the Ravens a week ago, where he completed a season-worst 46.4 percent of his passes for just 157 yards with an interception, Smith rebounded with the turnover-free performance that many had become accustomed to in Seattle last year.
Smith completed 31 of his 47 passes for 369 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday against the Commanders and notched the 13th game-winning drive of his career.
While Smith would've liked to had his latest game-winning drive end in a touchdown, it was the last of two lead-changing drives in the fourth quarter for Seattle. Following an early fourth-quarter field goal from Jason Myers to extend the Seahawks' lead to 19-12, the Commanders struck even with Sam Howell's 19-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Gibson. It was then Smith's turn to answer the bell.
And answer the bell he did, leading the Seahawks 75 yards in 10 plays while completing all five of his passes for 50 yards with a five-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Lockett to give his team the lead.
He'd have to do it again after Howell pulled the Commanders even with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Dyami Brown. This time, though, Smith did it with just two timeouts as he led the team 50 yards in five plays, completing four of his six passes for another 50 yards. This set up Myers up for the game-winning 43-yard field goal with no time left.
Smith will look to continue his "almost perfect" play when the Seahawks travel to SoFi Stadium to take on the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.
