Seahawks QB Geno Smith 'Has Kept His Mouth Shut!' as Big Contract Awaits

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith voiced the confidence he had in himself early and often this past season, delivering the now-famed "I ain't write back" quote after a Week 1 win over the Denver Broncos.

But in the years leading up to his career-best season in 2022, one that saw him make the Pro Bowl, win Comeback Player of the Year and set multiple single-season franchise passing records, Smith has remained quiet, doing his due diligence behind the scenes after being seen as a veteran quarterback destined for a continued career as a backup.

It's this long-lived humbleness that has made his star receiver, DK Metcalf, feel that Smith is more than deserving of a major contract.

From Metcalf's perspective, it's boiled down to that one thing from Smith: staying quiet.

"He's kept his mouth shut the past three years," Metcalf said in an interview with NFL insider Jordan Schultz. "Played behind Russ, and when Russ went down, he stepped in and did his job."

While some backups or former second-round picks might make their displeasure with remaining on the bench known, Smith stayed the course despite approaching a make-or-break point in his career.

But the personal pressure clearly didn't mount up inside of him, as Smith quickly allowed Seahawks fans to put Russell Wilson in the past by erasing all the doubt that surrounded him and the team during what turned into a playoff season.

Even Metcalf admitted that the quarterback transition hardly made a difference, as Smith "didn't skip a beat."

"And this past season, even when they traded Russ, he didn't skip a beat with me or Tyler (Lockett)," Metcalf said. "Just took the keys to the offense and ran with it."

Considering all that Smith has done over the past year, he's guaranteed a major pay day, regardless of what team gives it to him. And when Smith gets it, Metcalf will be there as his biggest hype man.
