Seahawks QB Geno Smith Underrated? 'People Don't Realize!'
It would be difficult to find someone in NFL circles who wasn't impressed and happy for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith after last season. Taking over for Russell Wilson, not much was expected of Smith, but he flipped the script in the best way possible.
He led the Seahawks to an unlikely postseason appearance and broke several franchise records along the way. But there have been some detractors as to whether Smith can replicate his Pro Bowl form from last year.
However, NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe isn't one who thinks Smith's efforts were a flash in the pan.
“People don’t realize how great he was, and it wasn’t just a check down offense," Wolfe said on Good Morning Football. "He made a lot of big throws down the field. He was not afraid and still had 70 percent completion rate. I think this is a second half of his career resurgence for Geno Smith."
Entering the offseason, the Seahawks didn't rest on their laurels and added some more firepower to an offense that already had two 1,000-yard receivers in DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, along with a 1,000-yard rusher in Kenneth Walker III.
Plus, with the addition of cornerback Devon Witherspoon, the No. 5 pick in the draft, the defense also gets a nice little boost.
With many in the NFC focused solely on the likes of the Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers, and Philadelphia Eagles, there are some who are sleeping on what Seattle could do next season.
But not Wolfe.
"That offense was already very good [last season], you add in Jaxon Smith-Njigba with D.K. Metcalf, Tyler Lockett," Wolfe said. "On the other side of the ball, they added Witherspoon, Tariq Woolen was great. He needs a pairing on the other side, now he has that. This team's very complete. Why can’t they win the NFC West?"
Winning the NFC West is certainly a realistic goal for the Seahawks, especially given the 49ers' uncertain quarterback situation.
Seattle has the means to make a serious push in the NFC next season, and with the roster's natural progression, coupled with the additions this offseason, the Seahawks might not only be challenging for their division but for the NFC as well.
However, that is all predicated on Smith replicating his form from a year ago. He'll have to reach similar heights this season without having the element of surprise alongside him.
