Seahawks WR Jake Bobo Makes Roster Case With Performance vs. Vikings
The Seattle Seahawks got the preseason off to a winning start, defeating the Minnesota Vikings 24-13 at Lumen Field on Thursday.
As the training camp grind continues, the opportunity for players to get a "break" of sorts was no doubt welcome. But additionally, it gave players on the roster bubble a chance to stake their claim for a roster spot.
In Jake Bobo's case, the undrafted rookie free agent out of UCLA took his opportunity with both hands.
The 6- 4, 206-pound receiver made the most out of his limited chances. Bobo would finish his first preseason game with three catches for 55 yards and a touchdown.
That'll work.
As often with preseason outings, the overall result is taken with a grain of salt, while being more so a watch for individual players who flash on the screen.
Well, Bobo did just that.
First, he made a 29-yard catch to get the Seahawks' offense going in the second quarter as Drew Lock hit him off a play-action pass to set the offense up in the red zone.
Then came his touchdown.
On a 3rd and 8 on the Vikings' 19-yard line, Lock hit Bobo with a strike and the rookie forced his way into the endzone to give Seattle the lead heading into the fourth quarter.
But Bobo wasn't done there. It was then on special teams where he flashed next.
Upon a punt return, Bobo made a superb heads-up play as the ball bounced near the goal line, at which point the receiver grabbed the ball as he was being pushed into the endzone and flicked it back into play to set the Seattle defense up in a great position.
It's those kinds of plays that, if Bobo keeps making, will make a spot on the Seahawks' final 53-man roster more of a formality.
Nothing is set in stone since it's only been one preseason game, but Bobo took his opportunity with both hands. He now has to build on it.
