Seahawks 90-Man Countdown: WR Tyjon Lindsey - 'Jitterbug in Space'
With the calendar flipping to June and offseason activities well underway league-wide, the Seattle Seahawks will open training camp at the VMAC in less than two months, officially ushering in the 2023 season.
To celebrate the new incoming season, I will be detailing every member of the Seahawks 90-man roster over the next several weeks, exploring best and worst case scenarios and what to expect from each player entering the 2023 campaign.
Tyjon Lindsey, Receiver
Height/Weight: 5-8, 171 pounds
2022 Stats*: 30 receptions, 317 yards, three total touchdowns
*College stats at Oregon State
Heralding from the prestigious Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Lindsey committed to Nebraska after surpassing 1,000 yards and scoring 14 touchdowns in his final prep season. Midway through his sophomore season, he transferred to Oregon State and sat out the remainder of the season per NCAA rules. Playing four seasons in Corvallis, he caught 75 passes for 917 yards and nine touchdowns while also contributing 184 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
Putting up impressive numbers at Oregon State's pro day, Lindsey ran a blazing 4.47 40-yard dash, posted a 38-inch vertical jump, and ran a 6.68 3-cone drill, displaying excellent explosion and change of direction skills. Going undrafted due to limited production and size concerns, he signed with the Seahawks as a free agent.
Best-Case Scenario: Making his best Jakim Grant impersonation, after not returning many kicks or punts for the Beavers, Lindsey emerges as a home run threat in the return game with his top-tier speed and shiftiness in space, winning a surprising spot on the roster for his special teams prowess.
Worst-Case Scenario: Struggling to get open against NFL cornerbacks and unable to quickly acclimate to a role as a regular return specialist, Lindsey receives a pink slip after the first preseason game and winds up in the XFL next spring.
What to Expect in 2023: A jitterbug in open space with the ball in his hands as a runner or receiver, Lindsey demonstrated plenty of toughness after the catch for a smaller receiver playing in the Pac-12 conference. But his lack of height prevented him from becoming a high-volume target in college and he will be competing in a receiver room headlined by DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, fellow rookie Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and a resurgent Dee Eskridge among others, not leaving many reps for players at the bottom of the depth chart.
Special teams could provide a road map for Lindsey to vie for a roster spot due to his athletic traits and ability to make defenders come up empty in space, but he only returned six punts and two kickoffs in six collegiate seasons. Lacking experience in that department will likely work against him and further lower the odds of him sticking around on the roster or practice squad.
