Seahawks' 'Wolf Grey' Jerseys Out After Throwbacks Revealed

With the release of the Seattle Seahawks' classic uniforms on Wednesday, the team announced that its "wolf grey" jerseys are being retired

Seattle Seahawks fans and jersey enthusiasts were treated on Wednesday when the team announced the long-awaited return of its royal blue throwback uniforms.

The Seahawks wore those same jerseys from their inaugural season in 1976 up until 2001, and now they are finally back after more than two decades. The throwbacks perfect adapt the old-school look to the modern age, and fans across the league were ecstatic to see their return.

With one jersey coming in, though, another is on the way out. At the same time as they announced their throwbacks, the Seahawks announced that their "wolf grey" jerseys are being retired.

"If there's any downside to bringing back the throwbacks, however, it's that it means the elimination of the wolf grey jersey that has been one of the Seahawks' alternate looks since 2012," Seahawks.com writes. "NFL teams are only allowed a total of four jerseys, one home, one road, and two alternates, be it in the form of throwbacks, color rush or some other alternate. So adding a throwback meant the Seahawks had to eliminate either wolf grey or action green, and it wasn't an easy choice."

The decision between the two alternate jerseys was apparently very close, but the team ultimately decided to keep its neon green color rush jerseys. The team's site claims those jerseys are the highest-selling color rush jerseys in the league, and Doug Orwiler, the Seahawks managing director of consumer experience, added that their uniqueness with a color only the Seahawks use helped give them the edge.

"What's awesome about the color rush is it's very unique, it stands out from other jerseys across the league," Orwiler told Seahawks.com. "It resonates with the 12s, and that's where it made sense for us to keep it… As much as we're sad to see wolf grey go away, (action green) is a fun piece for us and we're excited to keep it."

The Seahawks have broken out their alternate grey tops for a game or two each season since 2012 and have a stellar 13-2-1 record in said jerseys. Their most recent, and now final, appearance came in a Week 9 road game against the Arizona Cardinals last season, which Seattle won 31-21.

After more than a decade of success in the grey jerseys, the Seahawks sadly must lay them to rest.
