Benched? Bears Done With Former Steelers WR Chase Claypool
PITTSBURGH -- Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool is falling fast in Chicago as the Bears will consider making him a healthy scratch in Week 2 after a sluggish performance in the season opener.
Claypool's performance against the Green Bay Packers was called out immediately by NFL media and fans across the country. His poor blocking ability and lack of effort were deemed "sleepwalking," and even the Bears noticed.
When asked about Claypool's performance, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said that he met with the former Steeler about his play.
"You all saw the plays that … and again, the perimeter blocking needed to improve for all of us. And we’re gonna get that, work hard to get that done. We’re looking at all possibilities right now," Eberflus said. "I’m not going to talk about who’s going to be up or down for the game right now for obvious reasons. We’re looking at all things to improve our team — Who’s going to be up and who will be down in terms of the active roster."
Claypool is in the midst of a contract year and has been the attention of negative headlines since joining the Bears. Coming into the season, Chicago reportedly had worries about his effort toward football, which was supported in his Week 1 performance.
Chicago plays the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2, and if Claypool isn't on the field, things could get troublesome for his future in the NFL.
