Lions Sign Former Steelers RB
PITTSBURGH -- The Detroit Lions are adding another Pittsburgh Steelers free agent, signing running back Benny Snell Jr., he announced on social media.
Snell visited a number of teams during the offseason but didn't land a deal heading into training camp. The Lions had to replace runner Justin Jackson, who retired at the age of 27, and have decided to add the former fourth-round pick.
Snell, 25, is entering his fifth NFL season. In 63 games, all with the Steelers, he's rushed 275 times for 982 yards and seven touchdowns.
Snell faded to third on the Steelers' depth chart last season after the emergence of undrafted rookie Jaylen Warren. He beat out Anthony McFarland for the final spot on the 53-man roster, and was the team's number-one back against the Indianapolis Colts when Najee Harris and Warren were both ruled out with injuries.
In the game, he rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown. In the offseason, the team decided not to re-sign Snell, and will instead choose between McFarland and a group of undrafted rookies as their RB3.
Snell will join former Steelers cornerback Cam Sutton in Detroit.
