LATROBE -- The Pittsburgh Steelers will roll out "everyone who's healthy" during their preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And leading the offense onto the field will be quarterback Kenny Pickett.

Head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed Pickett will play during the first preseason game, and is expected to see more work than a typical veteran starter would see in exhibition action.

"We'll play it by ear. We'll give him what he needs," Tomlin said. "That's always my mentality. I'm open to all that are healthy, playing. How much they will play will be determined by what it is they need to be a productive step in the process for them."

The Steelers are looking for fluidity with the team, and Pickett's development is a significant factor in the offense's capabilities throughout the season. Tomlin isn't certain what exactly he's looking for in Pickett's game but believes he'll know when he sees it.

"In an environment like this, it's probably prudent for us to be small picture," Tomlin said on keeping his attention to one day at a time.

After Pickett, all three backups - Mitch Trubisky, Mason Rudolph and Tanner Morgan - are expected to see action as well.

The Steelers kick off their preseason against the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay on Friday, Aug. 11, at 7 p.m.
