ESPN Analyst: Steelers Would Upgrade With Justin Fields
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers made a bold move, firing their offensive coordinator during the season for the first time since 1941. That next game, they snapped a 59-game streak of failing to hit 400 yards, and their quarterback had one of the best games of the season.
But the debate is still high on whether Kenny Pickett is the Steelers' next franchise quarterback or not. And with plenty of candidates in the 2024 NFL Draft and free agency, it'll be a hot topic of conversation on whether or not Pittsburgh should try to land another QB.
One ESPN analyst believes they could upgrade with a name many are down on. Even if he's not saying the Steelers could go get this quarterback, Dan Orlovsky believes it'd be an upgrade for a team with plenty of talent on both sides of the ball.
Listing off teams that would upgrade from the acquisition, Orlovsky named the Steelers as beneficiaries of having Justin Fields on their roster.
Fields's rookie contract ends after the 2024 season, meaning there is still another year of cheap quarterback play available if another team outside of the Chicago Bears is interested. Chicago will also likely land the first pick in the NFL Draft this spring, leaving them with plenty of options if they choose to move on.
In three years in the NFL, Fields has thrown 36 touchdowns to 27 interceptions. However, he's rushed for 1,963 yards and 11 touchdowns and has shown sports of great arm talent and play-making ability as a pro.
The Steelers probably don't have plans to give up on Pickett this offseason, but if he doesn't improve by the end of the year, that could change. Depending on the market for a name like Fields, Pittsburgh could find themselves in the conversation for Chicago's young quarterback - and if he's affordable via trade, why not bring in competition?
