Former Steelers Defender Hopes to Re-Sign With Team

The Pittsburgh Steelers could have an option if their defensive line doesn't work out.

PITTSBURGH -- Former Pittsburgh Steelers nose tackle Tyson Alualu isn't ready to hang up his cleats just yet. Despite being unsigned at the age of 36, the six-year Steeler is preparing like he'll have another year in the NFL, and is vouching for it to be in Pittsburgh.

During an appearance on The Sick Podcast with Steelers Crazy, Alualu said he's been training as if he'll play this season and feels good after having a down year following ankle surgery in 2021.

"I’m preparing like I will play this season," Alualu said. "I can’t tell where it’s gonna be. But in a perfect world, I would love to be back with the Steelers and finish here. But I’ve been training and it felt normal."

Alualu spent the offseason training with Steelers defensive tackle Cam Heyward and other Pittsburgh veterans. He still lives in the city, patiently awaiting a deal for the 2023 season.

As for the Steelers, they currently have a few options at nose tackle. Montrevious Adams returns for his third season with the team, Pittsburgh drafted Keeanu Benton in the second round and they signed veterans Armon Watts and Breiden Fehoko. They also have Jonothan Marshall, who they signed off the New York Jets practice squad last year.

Alualu spent six years with the Steelers, starting 26 games and recording 158 tackles, 7.5 sacks and 16 tackles for loss.
