Insider: Steelers Targeting Two Impact Free Agents

The Pittsburgh Steelers have their eyes on big-time signings.
In this story:

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers need both a starting inside linebacker and cornerback, and according to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ray Fittipaldo, they're expected to pursue both in free agency.

During his weekly chat, Fittipaldo was asked what positions the team target in free agency. His answer included inside linebacker, cornerback, defensive line and a wide receiver, but linebacker and corner are focused on starters.

"ILB and CB -- targeting starters. A No. 3 WR. Maybe a DL," he writes.

General manager Omar Khan mentioned that the team will need to address inside linebacker this offseason as they don't have a clear indication of when Cole Holcomb will return from his ACL surgery.

"The inside linebacker position, we have Elandon Roberts under contract, Mark Robinson," Khan said. "Cole Holcomb had an awful (knee) injury. I don’t really have a timetable when he’ll be back. Kwon Alexander is a free agent, but he also had a major injury (Achilles). So it’s obviously a position that we have to address."

They likely have options at both positions. So far, former Miami Dolphins linebacker Jerome Baker and former Super Bowl champion Drue Tranquil have been named signees for Pittsburgh. Former Houston Texan Blake Cashman and Denver Bronco Josey Jewell have also been named candidates.

As for cornerbacks, they could target a trade with names like L'Jarius Sneed or Marshon Lattimore, or they could sign a Kendell Fuller or other free agents.
