International Game Back in Play for Steelers
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers could find themselves opening the 2024 season in São Paulo, Brazil, as the NFL announced the Philadelphia Eagles will host their Week 1 game on Friday night in South America, prior to the first Sunday of the season.
The Steelers are supposed to play on the road against the Eagles this season, making them a potential opponent for the season-opener. Pittsburgh was not given an international game in 2024 prior to Philadelphia being announced as the team to host in Brazil.
The Steelers have not played an international game since their 2013 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London. There was some belief they could, and still can, land a game in Mexico City in 2025.
Under the NFL's policy, a team must give up a home game once in an eight-year span for an international game. Pittsburgh was likely a top candidate for the Mexico City game this season, but Estadio Azteca is currently undergoing renovations for the 2026 World Cup. Therefore, the NFL split the games between London and Germany - and has now added Brazil.
The 2024 NFL schedule will be released in early May.
