Joey Porter Jr. Makes First Start for Steelers
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are sending rookie Joey Porter Jr. out with the starters in Week 8 as the team adjusts to Levi Wallace being out with a foot injury.
Porter, the team's second-round pick this offseason, has slowly increased his workload behind Wallace and Patrick Peterson, but has been held out of the starting role while the veterans played. Due to Wallace's injury, Porter finally gets the call with the first team.
Porter has worked exclusively on the left side throughout the year and will operate there against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Meanwhile, Peterson will switch from the left to right side to cover Wallace's role.
This season, Porter has allowed a 41.7% completion percentage through six games, recording three pass break ups and an interception.
Pittsburgh will also give rookie Darius Rush a helmet for the first time this season, marking his first NFL game. James Pierre will operate as the backup behind Porter and Peterson, with Rush being an option off the bench if needed.
