Rumor: Steelers Ready to Trade Up for Jalen Carter
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers caught everyone's attention when reports came out that they've made a phone call to the Chicago Bears about trading into the top 10 of the NFL Draft.
The question was for who? The Steelers could be approaching an offensive tackle in names like Paris Johnson or Peter Skronoski, or a cornerback such as Devon Witherspoon or Christian Gonzalez.
According to Peter King, though, it could be Georgia star Jalen Carter.
In his Football Morning in America column, King says the Steelers are the perfect fit for Carter, and he's heard rumors that Pittsburgh is looking to trade up and draft him.
"Jalen Carter has two visits to top-10 teams left before Wednesday’s deadline for players to make pre-draft visits to teams. That’s what agent Drew Rosenhaus told me Saturday. I’ll tell you the team that is the most perfect fit for Carter in the NFL: the Pittsburgh Steelers, who’d have to trade up from 17 to get him," King writes.
Rosenhaus has made it known on several occasions that he believes Carter is still a lock to go in the top 10. After pleading no contest to racing and reckless driving connected with the deaths of a teammate and Georgia football staffer, reports claimed teams were taking him off their board.
Chances are the Steelers would need to make a splash to go and get Carter, but they'd also have to hope the reports of him sliding are true. Unless they're ready to move up to number five and surpass teams like the Seattle Seahawks, Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles - all teams Carter met with - then they better hope Seattle and Detroit let him slide to nine where the Bears sit.
From what King is hearing, they'll be ready at nine.
"Best rumor of the week: Steelers trading up from 17 to nine if Carter is there There would not be a more perfect coach for Carter than Mike Tomlin," King writes.
