Steelers Begin Rebuilding Around Kenny Pickett

The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing to take Kenny Pickett to the next level.
In this story:

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are still figuring out their quarterback situation, but while they determine what direction they'll go in during the 2024 season, new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is getting accustomed to Kenny Pickett.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Smith met with Pickett in South Florida and had a "great" meeting about the current situation. As they sort through other options, the team has started "rebuilding" around the third-year quarterback.

"Even as they sort out their quarterback outlook, the Steelers have started the process of rebuilding third-year passer Kenny Pickett," Fowler writes. "I'm told new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith recently spent time with Pickett in South Florida and that the two had a "great" meeting. The sentiment among many here in Indy -- including some with the team -- was that Pickett could get another chance after a disastrous 2023 season due in part to the offense's overall struggles under then-OC Matt Canada. Smith should help maximize Pickett's skill set."

The Steelers have been linked to Justin Fields, J.J. McCarthy and a few other veteran options such as Russell Wilson and Kirk Cousins. Still, the expectation is that they will re-sign Mason Rudolph and determine which of the two they prefer by the start of the season.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh has started scouting offensive weapons, including some of the top wide receivers in the NFL Draft. They are even believed to be a candidate to trade up for one of the top wideout options.

Pickett is 14-10 as a starter in the NFL and has only worked with Matt Canada. Now, with a new offensive coordinator and quarterback coach in Tom Arth, the Steelers are hoping he takes a step forward.
