Steelers' Brian Flores Becomes Hottest Coaching Name Overnight
PITTSBURGH -- The turn for Pittsburgh Steelers senior defensive assistant Brian Flores was drastic. In less than 24 hours, a coaching search that seemed to remove Flores from all but one backup option is now highlighting him as one of the top options on the market, with two jobs seeming to be at the top.
Flores was named one of the three finalists for the Arizona Cardinals head coach position, joining Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo and New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. Flores was a late addition to the Cardinals' second-round interviews before the team closed the door on other candidates.
With Flores's connection to Cardinals' general manager Monti Ossenfort from their time in New England together, and to some is still considered the favorite to land the job.
Then, there's the Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator position. A job once believed to be waiting for former Denver Broncos' DC Ejiro Evero is now waiting for Flores.
Evero accepted the defensive coordinator role for the Carolina Panthers, joining Frank Reich. Now, Minnesota has moved Flores into the top spot for their search and will wait on him to seemingly decide between Arizona and the Vikings.
Flores is also scheduled to interview for the Broncos for their DC position.
For the Steelers, it's a rough spot to be in. Flores spent the last week at the Senior Bowl scouting with Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan. Now, he seems days away from packing up for a bigger opportunity. Pittsburgh has mentioned if they'll fill his role when he leaves, but trying to find another name as prominent as Flores might not happen this offseason.
