Steelers Captain Names Top OC Choices

The Pittsburgh Steelers' leader has high hopes for the team's next hire.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are beginning their search for a new offensive coordinator, and while they'll keep the search committee to Mike Tomlin, Omar Khan and Art Rooney II, there are many within and around the organization who have thoughts on the team's next offensive play-caller.

One player who has spoken up is defensive captain Cam Heyward, who named three of his top choices during his podcast Not Just Football. Heyward admitted it's not his call who the team hires, but he did lay out three names he sees as top candidates to consider.

"A guy like Eric Bieniemy, who’s had a lot of success in Kansas City," Heyward said. "A name that’s been talked about, not just with the Steelers, talking offensive coordinators in general, is Shane Waldron, Bobby Slowik. I don’t like to play GM, but there are some interesting names out there. It’s got to be a guy that’s able to get a lot of guys involved and lead a group, so it’s going to be interesting."

All three names would be interesting choices for the Steelers. Bieniemy has been one of the hottest coaching names for several years after helping Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs reach the heights they have. Slowik led C.J. Stroud and a young offense in Houston to the Divisional round of the playoffs this season, and Waldron comes from the Sean McVay coaching tree that has seen plenty of offensive success.

Pittsburgh may be out of luck on Waldron, as the former Seahawk is expected to be hired by the Chicago Bears, according to multiple reports. As for the other two, the Steelers could certainly try to include them in their search.
