Steelers Face Historic Challenge Against Texans
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have faced some big-name quarterbacks this season, but their toughest test yet will come in Week 4 when they face the Houston Texans.
Through three games, second-overall pick C.J. Stroud has yet to throw an interception. Leaving his first win in the NFL, his current stat line for 2023 reads as 78 off 121 passes completed, 906 yards and four touchdowns.
He's the first rookie in NFL history to throw for 900 yards and four touchdowns without an interception.
"The best thing that happened to the Houston Texans’ franchise was us beating the Indianapolis Colts last game, last year," Texans tight end Brevin Jordan told reports after Week 3. "We drafted the right guy. Man, he’s a leader. He’s a phenomenal player and a phenomenal guy with God-given talent. Dude, he’s unbelievable."
While Brock Purdy, Deshaun Watson and Jimmy Garoppolo aren't names to overlook, they may not be as impressive as the Texans rookie. And on top of their quarterback, they have a rookie wide receiver in Tank Dell who have found a groove together, combining for 217 yards and two scores the last two games.
"For our young guys who stepped up and played, we have a lot of rookies playing for us. For me, the guys who are out there, it’s just about – I don’t care rookie, veteran – guys who are going to play the game the right way play with intensity, play with a relentless mindset. Guys are going to S.W.A.R.M – that’s what I want on the field. I don’t care where you were drafted, how we acquired you – it’s like, ‘Are you playing football the right way – the Texans brand of football?’ If you play that, then you’ll play for us," head coach DeMeco Ryans said about his rookie QB-WR duo.
Good news for the Steelers is that Stroud has been sacked 11 times this season. T.J. Watt is currently on pace for 34 sacks in 2023, and when it comes to intercepting Stroud, the secondary has four interceptions this season, including two last week.
If anyone is going to give Stroud trouble, it's going to be Pittsburgh, but they can't overlook the young talent the Houston Texans found at the No. 2 pick.
