Report: Steelers In On Chase Young Trade
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly in on Washington Commanders defensive end Chase Young, and are looking for ways to pursue the former second-overall pick, according to Jeff Hartman of Behind the Steel Curtain.
The Commanders decided to decline Young’s fifth-year option, leading to speculation he could be traded before his contract expires. The Steelers have “strong interest” if he is on the market.
“The question isn’t if the interest is there, but if the team will be able to get a deal done or not,” Hartman writes.
The Steelers currently have the fifth-best odds to land Young, according to BetOnline.ag. They fall behind the Detroit Lions (4/1 odds), Seattle Seahawks (5/1) and Chicago Bears (6/1) and New York Giants (6/1).
The Steelers would need to find a way to make Young’s cap hit work and figure out a plan for the future. Young's cap hit in 2023 is $10.9 million. Both he and Alex Highsmith would need contracts after the season.
If Pittsburgh were to acquire Young, it would lead to questions on what the rotation would be between he, Highsmith and T.J. Watt, and if that pushes either Markus Golden or rookie Nick Herbig out of the mix.
The compensation for Young hasn’t been reported, but a former first-round pick should still be worth a pretty penny entering his fourth season.
