Report: Steelers Keeping Teryl Austin as DC
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to find a new offensive coordinator this offseason, and more coaching changes are expected. But according to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac, defensive coordinator is not one of them.
Dulac reports the Steelers are not considering a change at defensive coordinator and that Teryl Austin will sign a new contract to remain in the position next season.
Austin's contract expires this offseason, but a new deal should be in place before the summer. His defense dealt with significant injuries, including both of their starting inside linebackers and the absence of Minkah Fitzpatrick and Cam Heyward for large chunks of time throughout the season.
Dulac only named one coach the Steelers should not be expected to bring back, and that is quarterback coach Mike Sullivan, due to the potential "awkwardness" of the situation.
"No coordinator would want the coach who previously called the plays looking over his shoulder," Dulac writes.
It's unknown if that would also include running backs coach Eddie Faulkner, who was the other interim OC this season.
The Steelers have started their process of finding a new play-caller, requesting an interview with Los Angeles Rams QB coach Zac Robinson. They're expected to continue reviewing candidates as they start their scouting process for the NFL Draft.
