Steelers Likely Keeping New RB Sidelined

The Pittsburgh Steelers probably aren't rolling out their new returner this week.
In this story:

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers added a new running back to their roster, signing Godwin Igwebuike off the Atlanta Falcons practice squad following the placement of Anthony McFarland on Injured Reserve due to a knee injury.

Igwebuike makes a lot of sense for Pittsburgh. The NFL journeyman started his career at safety before transitioning to running back, but also has kick returner capabilities as well. While the Steelers won't be lining him up next to Minkah Fitzpatrick, they could look to deploy him as a returner. Just not this week.

With the promotion of Qadree Ollison from the practice squad to the active/inactive list, the Steelers had likely made their call to keep Igwebuike sidelined in Week 3.

After arriving during the week, Igwebuike jumped on a moving train and was working tirelessly to learn the playbook and familiarize himself with the team. He's a strong option to replace McFarland on returns moving forward, but this week, they'll look for another option - most likely.

Calvin Austin is probably the go-to for both kick and punt return duties this week after Gunner Olszewski handled them last week until he left the game with a concussion. With Olszewski out, Pittsburgh will turn to their second-year wideout.

Cornerback Desmond King is another name to watch. The former Houston Texan hasn't been active for a game yet, but could make his first appearance with the team needing a returner.

If the Steelers believe an extra defensive back makes sense, they could go with seven cornerbacks active on game day - a large number compared to a usual weekend.

Igwebuike will get his opportunity in Pittsburgh, and must remain on the active roster for at least four games. As long as he learns the playbook as quickly as possible, there shouldn't be much holding him back from an opportunity on returns.
