Steelers Look Dangerously Good
PITTSBURGH -- This Pittsburgh Steelers team looks good. We've been saying that, but always with a side of caution. But after their preseason win over the Buffalo Bills, it may be time to give in to the hype.
It all started on the opening drive. The Steelers received, started everything off with a run to Najee Harris, and then settled into their zone. Kenny Pickett worked the field on two completions, including a third down throw where he stepped up in the pocket and found Allen Robinson in coverage.
Then, they handed the ball off to Jaylen Warren, who took it between the left tackle, Dan Moore Jr., and the left guard, Isaac Seumalo, and exploded 62 yards to the house. On his way, he made Bills safety Jordan Poyer miss, and showed off his speed as he trotted down the sideline.
It didn't stop there, though.
On the Bills' opening drive, they went three-and-out, with a run stuff by Damontae Kazee and Levi Wallace, and a pressure on third down by T.J. Watt. Then, Calvin Austin fielded his first punt return in black and gold and made the most of it, take it between two defenders for 54 yards.
The Steelers started their next drive on the 25-yard line and needed just one play to find the endzone. A Pickett pass to Pat Freiermuth soared over the middle and split to defenders as "MUTH" filled Acrisure Stadium.
Buffalo's final possession with their starters finished with Allen running around desperately trying to find an open receiver before Alex Highsmith brought him down for a six-yard loss.
From there, the Steelers defense finished with four turnovers.
Pittsburgh's defense should be good. They have all the talent they could need and filled most of their holes in the offseason. They have options at inside linebacker, four very solid outside linebackers, a deep defensive line and a trio of safeties they feel good about.
Still, it's tough to imagine they would be this good. Good enough to make Allen and company look bad. Good enough to dominate their second game from start to finish.
Their offense had a ton of question marks heading into the preseason, but somehow they've exceeded even the biggest hype. And if their only issue is their starting running back, who's yet to crack five yards in a preseason game, their backup looks more than capable of being a star.
This team is deep, has sleepers such as Elijah Riley and Chandon Sullivan, and feels like they finally know how to operate with the weapons they have on both sides of the ball.
Their schedule won't do them any favors, and the AFC North is no cakewalk, but the Steelers look good. Better than we believed they'd be.
