PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have an injured veteran making good progress toward an eventual return this week.

Defensive lineman Cameron Heyward was back at practice this week, ahead of a Week 8 bout with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team announced. He remained on the Reserve/Injured list.

Heyward now has 21 days for the Steelers to activate him or he must remain on the injured reserve for the remainder of the 2023-24 season. If he's not active before the Steelers travel to Cleveland to play the Browns in mid-November, he won't play again this season.

Heyward suffered a groin injury early in the Steelers' Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers at Acrisure Stadium and had to undergo surgery during his recovery.

The Steelers have been relying on a mix of Keeanu Benton, Montravius Adams, Demarvin Leal and others to fill the gap in the meantime.
