Steelers CB Patrick Peterson Named Free Agent Who Signed With Wrong Team
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers' accusation of Patrick Peterson isn't getting much love. The 33-year-old signed a two-year deal to finish his career in black and gold, but coming to Pittsburgh was the wrong move for one publication.
Listing the players who signed in the wrong places, Bleacher Report has named Peterson as someone who made a mistake in free agency.
The argument presented is that Peterson played for a defense that ranked 25th in the league in terms of man-to-man usage. Now, with the Steelers, he's entering a defense that utilizes mostly man-to-man.
"Father Time comes for everyone. At one time Peterson was one of the NFL's best corners and it wouldn't matter what scheme he was in," BR writes.
"That time is gone. As his age-33 season approaches, there's a real possibility that Peterson's play is set to fall off a cliff if the Steelers continue to heavily rely on man coverage in their second season under coordinator Teryl Austin.
"Even if Peterson couldn't arrange a new contract with Minnesota, it would have been wise to find a scheme that would accommodate him better."
Head coach Mike Tomlin has mentioned that Peterson could move around the defense and play both the slot and safety. Trying to stick to players one-on-one at age 33 could be a difficult adjustment, but the future Hall of Famer has handled whatever workload has been thrown at him for 12 years.
Coming off a five-interception season in a zone-heavy scheme, it'll be interesting if this take holds up by the end of 2023.
