Steelers Urged to Sign Pro Bowl Pass Rusher

The Pittsburgh Steelers could add another star defensive lineman.
In this story:

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have their 90-man roster, but like every summer, changes will be made before they figure out the best 53 players to bring into the regular season.

One position that has been highlighted throughout the offseason for the Steelers is their defensive line. Even after the additions of Keeanu Benton, Breiden Fehoko, Armon Watts and Markus Golden, there's another name one former player believes they should sign before training camp. That player is Pro Bowl defensive end Yannick Ngakoue.

Ngakoue, 28, remains a free agent after spending the 2022 season with the Indianapolis Colts. And to former Steelers linebacker Arthur Moats, he's the perfect piece for Pittsburgh's defense.

"When you bring in a Yannick who's a dope pass rusher in his own right, but to me, he is still more so a pass rush specialist, then like a true starter guy," Moats said on the Arthur Moats Experience Podcast. "With Yannick, you're just talking about the depth. Almost treat Yannick like a slot corner. I only bring you out here when it is an obvious pass situation and I need a fastball. I need a dude that can go out there and win consistently and cook."

The former third-round pick has played eight NFL seasons and has never fallen short of eight sacks in a year. He has experience playing both defensive end and linebacker, and is coming off two of his best years, recording 19.5 sacks since 2021.

Ngakoue would join the mix of Larry Ogunjobi, DeMarvin Leal, T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith and Markus Golden, and would potentially pass up Nick Herbig at an edge rusher, if he bounced from both defensive end to outside linebacker.

The Steelers defensive line is hoping to make a jump from last season, but they could be in the market for more moves to assure themselves things will work in their favor. At the same time Ngakoue was named a possibility, Pitt legend Aaron Donald was also floated around as a potential trade candidate.

At this point, if the Steelers want to a boost to their defensive front, they have options.
