Steelers Bring In Four Safeties Ahead of Packers Game
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are continuing to be prepared at the safety position, bringing in four players for workouts ahead of their Week 10 matchup with the Green Bay Packers.
The Steelers are still without All-Pro Minkah Fitzpatrick who has missed the last two weeks with a hamstring injury. He's yet to return to practice since leaving Week 8 and it's still unknown how long he'll be sidelined because of the injury.
In the meantime, the Steelers are making sure to cover their bases at the position. Just days before kickoff with the Packers, Pittsburgh brought in four safeties for workouts, including Keidron Smith, Tyler Coyle, Tyree Gillespie, and Nico Bolden.
Smith, who was originally signed by the Miami Dolphins this offseason but failed to make the team, is a standout out of Kentucky. The Second-Team All-SEC selection racked up 269 tackles, seven interceptions, six forced fumbles, and 25 pass breakups during his time as a Wildcat.
Coyle spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys as a safety out of Purdue. The Boilermaker spent most of his college career at UConn, where he recorded 86 tackles, 11 pass deflections, two forced fumbles and an interception in his final season.
Bolden started his college career at New Mexico but transferred to Kent State, where, in 23 games, he recorded 188 tackles, two forced fumbles, two interceptions and 3.5 tackles for loss. The Steelers have a history of falling in love with MAC players, so Bolden instantly becomes a name to watch.
And finally, Gillespie, a former fourth-round pick out of Missouri, has played with the Las Vegas Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars and most recently the Houston Texans. He's accumulated 14 games of NFL experience and has played a role on special teams in the pros.
The Steelers are currently working with Damontae Kazee, Keanu Neal, Miles Killebrew and Elijah Riley at safety, with rookie Darius Rush and veteran Patrick Peterson moving back from cornerback to help.
