Quarterbacky?: Steelers Missing Piece Could Kill Hope
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking for better quarterback play this season and are determined to find competition for Kenny Pickett before they take the field in the spring. Although Mason Rudolph is their top option, he may not be their best, and one ESPN analyst says they have to go bigger to win playoff games.
During NFL Live, ESPN's Marcus Spears made it clear that the Steelers need to upgrade their quarterback position this offseason, and settling for Pickett or Rudolph won't be good enough to end their playoff win drought.
"So, Mr. Rooney, are you feeling quarterbacky? Because that’s what you need in order to take these steps forward," Spears said. "Cast no aspersions. Mason Rudolph played solid for them down the stretch. Kenny Pickett is young and maybe you don’t want to give up on him. I don’t think you have a quarterback on the roster that’s going to get you to where you’re talking about going, Rooney, so if you don’t address that, I feel like you’ll be impatient again next offseason."
Steelers President Art Rooney II and head coach Mike Tomlin have both said they want Rudolph to return to the team as their potential starter. If he doesn't, it's unknown what direction they'll go in for competition with Pickett.
Some have suggested names like Jacoby Brissett and Sam Darnold, while the theory is that hiring Arthur Smith as offensive coordinator could lead to Ryan Tannehill joining the team.
For now, they'll try to work with what they've got, but not everyone agrees it's going to be enough.
