New Details on Arthur Smith’s Contract With Steelers
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have their new offensive coordinator, according to multiple reports. As of this week, they've agreed in principle to a deal with former Falcons head coach Arthur Smith but have yet to make the move official.
But new details have now emerged about what kind of contract Smith will sign. Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reported that Smith's contract with the Steelers - which he still has yet to sign - will be for three years.
A three-year contract would be the same as what former Steelers offensive coordinator Matt Canada reportedly signed for. He was hired in 2020 and his contract reportedly ran through the 2023 season.
Smith was in Pittsburgh earlier this week to interview with the Steelers and the two sides appear to have agreed to a deal soon after. The bulk of his resume is built off two very successful seasons with the Tennessee Titans, during which he oversaw a dominant rushing attack led by Derrick Henry and revived the career of veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
Smith, 41, spent the last three seasons with the Falcons before being relieved this offseason. Prior to Atlanta, he worked his way from quality control coach to offensive coordinator with the Titans, spending 10 seasons with the team from 2011 to 2020.
He spent time as the offensive line coach (2013), assistant tight ends coach (2014-2015), tight ends coach (2016-2018) and eventually OC (2019-2020).
The Steelers fired Matt Canada following a Week 11 loss to the Cleveland Browns in which they scored just 10 points.
