Report: Steelers Could Still Re-Sign Mason Rudolph
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are competing with "several teams" who have interest in quarterback Mason Rudolph, but according to NBC Sports' Mike Florio, the door is still open for a return.
The Athletic reported after the Russell Wilson signing that Rudolph didn't seem likely to re-sign with the Steelers. Now, without much chance of a competition, it appeared he was headed elsewhere. Later the same day, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo said multiple teams are interested in acquiring Rudolph as the legal tampering period continues
Still, according to Florio, it's still in play for Pittsburgh to re-sign their veteran backup.
"With the Steelers planning to sign quarterback Russell Wilson after the Broncos officially release him, many have assumed that the Steelers will move on from veteran backup Mason Rudolph. That might not be the case," Florio writes.
"Per a league source, Rudolph is still in play for Pittsburgh."
Chances are Rudolph wouldn't re-sign to compete with both Kenny Pickett and Wilson this summer, and instead would be resuming his role as the third string. If his market doesn't hold the value he thought it would, that may be an option, but if more money and a bigger role is available elsewhere, that has always seemed like the most likely path.
The Steelers have been in contact with Rudolph's representatives throughout the offseason, and will likely continue those talks as they try to figure out a direction over the next few days. As of now, the door is still open, but offers elsewhere may decide how open it is.
