Source: Steelers Met With Kenny Pickett Before Russ Signing
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers had an interest in Russell Wilson before they met with him this past weekend. During the NFL Combine, league sources told All Steelers that the team planned to pursue the veteran quarterback as soon as the Denver Broncos released him, hoping he would sign for a league minimum contract.
Once he was released, league sources tell All Steelers that the team met with Kenny Pickett to explain their plans to pursue the Broncos quarterback. Pickett was very open to the idea, being described as a "true professional" about the situation.
With Wilson coming to Pittsburgh, the Steelers are looking for competition at their quarterback position but believe Pickett has the upside to win the job in 2024. Their hope is that Wilson adds a veteran mentor for Pickett, and is a reliable backup in case they need to turn to him during the season.
The team believes both quarterbacks can carry them to the postseason.
With a new offensive coordinator and plenty of weapons around them, either quarterback should shine in the Steelers' offense this season. That competition will open up once OTAs and mini camp begin, and it'll be interesting to see who takes the first snaps with the starters.
For now, though, the team's third-year quarterback is welcoming of the Super Bowl-winning veteran and of the competition it brings.
