49ers Offense Gets Major Boost Ahead of Steelers Game
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers will host the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1 as they begin their 2023 campaign in hopes of returning the postseason. But in their home opener, they'll face a running back combination that, when healthy, is one of the best in the NFL.
The Steelers recently received news that 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell will be on the field in Week 1 after returning from an adductor strain. The third-year runner confirmed he'll be ready to play during a recent media session.
Mitchell has dealt with plenty of injuries over his first two seasons, playing just 16 of the 33 possible games since joining the league, including just five last season. When he is on the field, though, his potential is maximized, averaging 6.2 yards per carry and contributing 1,242 yards and seven touchdowns to the 49ers offense.
Mitchell and McCaffrey could be the focal point of the 49ers offense this season as Brock Purdy returns from injury.
On the other side of the ball, the 49ers could be without their biggest weapon in Nick Bosa. While the reigning Defensive Player of the Year awaits a contract, he will not suit up, and if no deal is done before kickoff, it's unlikely he plays in the season opener.
