Steelers Named Landing Spot for Former Seahawks OL
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have their initial 53-man roster set, but there's a missing piece one publication believes they should go out and sign.
Bleacher Reports has highlighted former Las Vegas Raiders and Seattle Seahawks guard Gabe Jackson as a player the Steelers should target. With Nate Herbig and seventh-round rookie Spencer Anderson as their backups to James Daniels and Isaac Seumalu, Pittsburgh's offensive line depth is believed to need an addition.
"Given the success of the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive line under position coach Jeff Stoutland," BR's Alex Ballentine writes. "It’s not a bad idea just to poach former Eagles offensive linemen. However, Herbig suffered a shoulder injury during training camp. While he seems to be trending in the right direction, it also exemplifies how important it is to have depth on the offensive line. Gabe Jackson could help provide more of that. The 32-year-old is getting up there in years, but he has started at least 15 games in each of the last three seasons. Last year, he allowed only two sacks for the Seattle Seahawks, per PFF."
Jackson would assumably move into the backup role alongside Herbig instead of replacing him. However, it's unlikely the Steelers are uncomfortable with their depth of Herbig and Anderson after trading Kevin Dotson and Kendrick Green before their roster was set.
If Herbig did have to miss time because of his shoulder injury, the Steelers would then consider a move outside of the team, but if he's healthy for Week 1, it's hard to imagine them making a change and replacing their versatile seventh-round rookie, or their newly-signed backup.
