Steelers Mock Draft: Star CB, WR Headed to Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Steelers land a big name cornerback, lineman and wide receiver early in the NFL Draft.
In this story:

The Pittsburgh Steelers enter the 2023 offseason with a list of key free agents, and key holes that will need filled at important positions.

With the NFL Combine just over two weeks away, and free agency beginning in a month, here is our post-Super Bowl mock draft.

Round 1, Pick 17: CB Joey Porter Jr, Penn State

The pick would make sense for a lot of reasons. The Steelers love legacy and family ties in the organization, and Porter is one of the best cornerbacks in the nation. It’s been quite sometime since the Steelers had a young, lockdown corner in their prime, and Porter would provide a stable presence on the perimeter.

Round 2, Pick 32: OC John Michael Schmitz, Minnesota

Mason Cole was fine in 2022, but Schmitz was arguably the best center in college football. Pittsburgh has passed on top offensive linemen in the last two drafts and it’s come back to haunt them - they need to address the interior.

Round 2, Pick 49: WR Zay Flowers, Boston College

Flowers was one of the most electric receivers in the nation in 2022. He has a small frame, but the ability to make contested catches and his speed is truly game-changing. Plugging him in the slot and using him in a Deebo Samuel-type role would give the offense a new dimension and yet another great selection of a wide receiver.

Round 3, Pick 80: DT Gervon Dexter, Florida

The Steelers need more depth on the defensive line. Dexter is great at winning one-on-one matchups, and can help take the attention off of Cam Heyward and T.J. Watt.

Round 4, Pick 120: LB DeMarvion Overshown, Texas

The former safety could be a piece at inside linebacker that the Steelers have been lacking since Devin Bush’s injury. He’s versatile and can cover, which is a must for linebackers in this defense scheme. He’s a tall, fast athlete that would bring an upgrade at athleticism and instincts to the middle of the Steelers’ defense.

Round 7, Pick 236: WR Nathaniel “Tank” Dell, Houston

If Dell is available in the seventh round, the Steelers should take him and run. He’s another guy whose size will leave people hesitant, but when matched up against bigger corners, he will have a field day like he did in Mobile during the Senior Bowl.

Round 7, Pick 243: S Christian Izien, Rutgers

Terrell Edmunds and Damontae Kazee will both be free agents this spring. Izien had a great college career, but because he played for a bad team, it went largely unnoticed. He totaled over 200 tackles and four interceptions in his career at Rutgers. At the least, he could be a surprising late-round pick who gets some time on special teams and can provide depth on the back end of the defense.
