Steelers Shouldn't Care About Odell Beckham Jr. Signing
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers, along with the rest of the NFL, got a bit of a surprise Sunday evening when news of Odell Beckham Jr. signing with the Baltimore Ravens hit the internet.
The Pro Bowl wide receiver heads to Baltimore on a one-year, $15 million deal worth up to $18 million. A great deal for the 30-year-old Beckham, but does it move the needle for the Ravens this season?
Even if the Steelers didn't impress last season, the expectations in 2023 are higher. Kenny Pickett enters year two of his NFL career, and with his sophomore season comes a Super Bowl window in Pittsburgh. It doesn't mean they'll walk away champions next year or the year after, but their best time to win is now - and could happen if everything clicks.
Meanwhile, the Ravens are in the midst of a dramatic offseason. Lamar Jackson and his trade request sit atop the NFL new cycle this spring, but even aside from the team's quarterback troubles, they've had players call out their general manager and a player report card expose their apparent lack of proper training staff.
Having Jackson, a former MVP, will always make a team better. And if he plays for the Ravens this season, they won't be expected to be a nobody. However, having to work around Jackson being elsewhere, or sitting home for a season, changes everything. Yes, he posted a picture of him and OBJ all smiles about the signing, but $200 million typically hold higher ground than the excitement of playing with a certain player.
There are certain players in the league that could keep expectations high for the Ravens even without Jackson. Even players who aren't a quarterback. But that list is short, and unless some blockbuster moves takes place, OBJ isn't enough to keep the Ravens' head above water without their QB.
