Steelers Snubbed: Is the NFL Done Forcing Awards Now?
PITTSBURGH -- T.J. Watt didn't walk away as the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year, which probably only upset Pittsburgh Steelers fans, but the motive behind why he didn't win should cause some concern around the NFL.
There's nothing against Myles Garrett. In fact, the Cleveland Browns defensive end may have been the second-best defensive player in the NFL this season. What he wasn't was the best - but it wouldn't have mattered if he was the worst. He was winning the award.
That's what we've become with this award. Defensive Player of the Year needs to be handed to certain players in order for them to solidify their legacy. Garrett was the greatest defensive player to touch a field since Lawrence Taylor the moment he was drafted. How could he not finish his career with at least one DPOY trophy?
It's not the problem with analytics or with Garrett being a dominant player. Both of those are fine. It's a problem those who vote have right now where they have the winner in their minds before the season starts.
And unfortunately, there has already been one Watt brother who has dominated the league as much as T.J. is. It's boring to have two.
But now that Garrett has won, can it return to normal? Can the award for the best defensive player be given to the best defensive player?
Hopefully.
