Bobby Slowik Named AP Assistant Coach of the Year Finalist
Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik was named a finalist for the 2023 NFL AP Assistant Coach of the Year on Thursday.
The nomination comes as no surprise as Slowik is in the running for several NFL head coaching positions based on his success with rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud and turning around the Texans' offense.
He joins Ben Johnson of the Detroit Lions and Todd Monken of the Baltimore Ravens one of three offensive coordinators on the list. Ravens defensive coordinator Mike McDonald and Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz are also finalists.
Under new leadership in 2023, head coach Demeco Ryans and Bobby Slowik helped lead the Texans to their first playoff appearance and win since 2019, stomping on the Cleveland Browns 45-14 in the Wild Card round.
Slowik's offense saw 274 passing yards and three touchdowns from Stroud in the game and running back Devin Singletary with 13 carries for 66 yards and one touchdown.
Guided by Slowik, Stroud crafted one of the most impressive rookie seasons in NFL history, throwing for throwing for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns with just five interceptions.
Slowik's coaching prowess extended to receiver Nico Collins, who had a standout career year, and rookie Tank Dell, who seamlessly transitioned to the NFL under his guidance, and became one of the most explosive playmakers on the roster.
Bobby Slowik Leaving Texans For Falcons?
At 36 years old, Slowik would become the NFL's youngest active head coach if hired. Notably, he is almost 16 months younger than the recently appointed Patriots coach, Jerod Mayo.
So far, Slowik has interviewed for head coaching positions with the Commanders, Falcons, Titans, and Panthers.
The Falcons are scheduled to hold a second interview with Slowik in the coming days.
