DeMeco Ryans Says Houston Texans Had 'Nothing' at Trade Deadline
HOUSTON — The Houston Texans were one of several teams that did not make a move during the NFL's trade deadline. The experience was a 180 from the drama of last season when Brandin Cooks took to social media to display his frustration after the Texans failed to move him last October.
Things for the Texans were silent in 2023. And coach DeMeco Ryans said there was "nothing" for Houston ahead of Tuesday's deadline.
"We feel good with where we are now," Ryans said. "As we continue to go throughout the season, just want our guys to continue to improve and that’s just been our focus; improving the guys that we have here and working with the guys that we have and seeing them improve."
Ryans revealed they would have made a move if the opportunity had presented itself. His thoughts coincided with general manager Nick Caserio. Ahead of the Texans' bye week, Caserio publicized that Houston had a "pretty good working budget" to add talent — a projected $5.0 million available in cap space.
"If there's somebody externally that we think can come in here and really have a defined role and have an impact, then we'll certainly look into that," Caserio said. "If there's not, then we won't...Whatever happens at the trade deadline happens at the trade deadline.
The Texans' current roster has led to the team posting a 3-4 record seven games into the season. They are one spot behind the Cleveland Browns (4-3) for the seventh and final playoff spot in the AFC.
Houston has a slim chance of making the playoffs for the first time since 2019. But not even the chances of clinching a playoff berth could inspire the franchise to make a deal in the closing minutes of the deadline.
