HOUSTON — The Houston Texans officially welcomed Bobby Slowik as the team's new offensive coordinator Wednesday morning.

At the helm of Houston's offense, the consensus believes the Texans will have a new quarterback under center come Week 1 of the 2023 campaign. And Slowik believes a rookie quarterback can start in his offense come opening day.

"I would point to the end of last year. Unfortunately, we had to go through three quarterbacks last year, but we had ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ (Brock Purdy) who did one heck of a job playing for us in San Francisco by taking us all the way to the NFC Championship game," Slowik said.

"I think how you structure the entire thing, offense, that includes defense, that includes special teams, everything plays a hand in how it all goes together."

Unless the Texans divert from their plan of using the No. 2 pick of the 2023 NFL Draft on a quarterback, Houston will likely start next season with a rookie under center — most noticeably in the likes of C.J. Stroud or Bryce Young.

The hiring of Slowik could be the best possible outcome when it comes to the Texans starting a rookie quarterback.

The source described Slowik as a "bright young coach who would be good for the Texans." But more importantly, they credited Slowik for the success the Niners experienced under Purdy.

San Francisco averaged 226.8 passing yards while scoring 26.5 points during the 2022 campaign. In the seven games Purdy started before losing in the NFC Championship game, he threw for an average of 234.8 yards, 14 touchdowns, and two interceptions.

"There’s a lot that goes into that," Slowik said. "It’s not about one position. It’s the whole unit and how it all fits together. We kind of take a top-down view. How we see everything working together it’s that we're an offense built on precession and everybody working together in unison, on time, in rhythm. That’s the starting point. It’s not any one given position. We see how it all fits."

The Texans met with Stroud and Young at the NFL Scouting Combine. Young is fond of reuniting with his former college teammates Christian Harris and John Metchie, while Stroud is interested in building a "deeper" relationship with the Texans.
