FA QB Jimmy Garoppolo In Play For Texans? 'We Have To Add At That Position'

Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans spoke on the importance of adding players to the quarterback room. But will it lead to the Texans signing Jimmy Garoppolo in free agency?
In this story:

HOUSTON — The Houston Texans are in a prime position to draft either C.J. Stroud or Bryce Young during the 2023 NFL Draft.

The decision would leave two quarterbacks in the position group with Davis Mills still under contract. But coach DeMeco Ryans hinted at the possibility of Houston exploring free agency to land another quarterback.

The Texans are not likely to go after Derek Carr. But Houston could be in play for Jimmy Garoppolo, given that his time with the San Francisco 49ers is over.

"You saw when we acquired Jimmy [Garoppolo], and towards the end of the year you saw the quarterback came in and we won five-straight games," Ryans said. "It just teaches you that when you do have a bona fide quarterback, it helps you win games, helps you be successful."

Garoppolo finished his injury-plagued season throwing for 2,437 yards while completing 67.2 percent of his passes, to go along with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions.

His season ended prematurely due to a Lisfranc foot injury sustained during the 49ers' Week 13 victory against the Miami Dolphins.

"We have one quarterback on our roster, so we have to add at that position," Ryans said. "We’ll do it through free agency and the draft. We have to add two guys to our roster, so looking to find the best guys that we can have. There’s a good group of quarterbacks in free agency and in the draft."

Garoppolo would make for a great veteran in the position group. But as a team still in the early stages of its rebuild, the Texans would be better off sticking to Stroud or Young as their starting quarterback come the opening week of the 2023 campaign.
