Texans BREAKING: Pro Bowl CB Shaquill Griffin Signs with Houston
HOUSTON - The remodeling of the Houston Texans franchise is still firmly underway.
According to multiple reports, the Texans have signed former Seattle Seahawks and Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Shaquill Griffin to a one-year deal worth up to $4.5 million. Griffin was released by the Jaguars after two seasons with the team. He had previously signed a three-year, $40 million deal with Jacksonville in January of 2021.
Griffin now joins a secondary that looks immensely more talented than it did a year ago, with second-year talents Derek Stingley Jr. and Jalen Pitre, veterans Steven Nelson and Desmond King, and new additions Brandon Hill, Jimmie Ward and Darius Phillips.
In his two years with Jacksonville, Griffin played in just 19 total games, missing 12 in 2022 alone with a back injury. Over that time, he amassed 78 tackles, three tackles for loss, 11 passes defended, and had no interceptions.
Before heading to Jacksonville, however, Griffin was a major difference maker for the Seahawks, playing in 57 games over four seasons, and making a Pro Bowl in 2019. During his years in Seattle, Griffin totaled 249 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 49 passes defended, and six interceptions.
Coming off of the injury, the Texans are bringing in Griffin on what many would consider a 'prove it deal'. As such, how he fits into the rotation in the secondary, or if he even makes the final 53-man roster at all is still up in the air.
Either way, Griffin's talent, when healthy is undeniable. And should he be able to stay on the field in Houston, he could be once again turn into an impact player.
